Glossary


Angst/Angstfic/Angsty: Putting characters through emotionally/physically/mentally pain and making the readers feel for them.

AR: Alternate Reality, bringing the characters into another time or place

AU: Alternate Universe, the characters are brought to another version of their own universe

BDSM: Bondage Dominance, Sado-Masochism. Sex/relationships involving sexual slavery, master/slave relationships, sadism and masochism as foreplay, bondage games, kink and fetish. Will usually involve leather, whips and chains.

Beta-Reader: Proof-reader, used to improve the story. They can focus on spelling/grammar and also on plot/characterisation.

Bishonen: "pretty boy", (manga/anime)

Bishoujo: "pretty girl",

Canon: Established fact, what is know about the fandom, the timelines, characters. E.g. Buffy Summers is the Slayer

Dark/Darkfic: Fiction that contains themes that are a lot darker than normal like rape, adult situations, violence, cutting, suicide, etc

Essays: Articles related to fandom, can be serious or just for fun

Fandom: A term used to encompass the fans, their activities and mostly everything related to whatever they are fans of. Eg., "The Star Wars fandom

Fanfiction (Fanfic): Fiction written by fans using characters/places/scenarios from fandom

Fanon: Accepted fact, not from canon, but used frequently by authors.

Femslash: female/female relationship, also "yuri" or f/f

G: Suitable for General Audiences, safe fore kids.

Het: short for "heterosexual sex/relationships/situations".

Lemon: Fics with explicit sexual content: NC-17

Lime: Fic with sexual content: R

Mailing List: Fans can come together here and post their stories, discussions about fandom, There are ML for fandom (eg Star Wars) or genres (Slash, multiple fandoms)

Manga: Japanese comics

Mary Sue: original female character (OFC). She takes over the fanfic entirely, out-shining even the main players

Marty Stu: original male character (OMC). Also known as Gary Stu or Harry Stu, the male version of Mary Sue.

ML: Mailing List

NC: Warning: non-consensual" (non-con) sexual situation, can include rape

NC-17: rating "No One 17 And Under Admitted". Graphic sex and/or violence.

OFC: Original Female Character

OMC: Original Male Character

PG: rating "Parental Guidance Advised".

PG-13: rating "Parental Guidance Cautioned".

Pre-slash: No (sexual) relationship has formed between the characters, but will in possible later installments, or will imply it will form in the future

PWP: "Porn Without Plot" or "Plot? *What* Plot?"

R: rating "Restricted". sex and/or violence, swearing etc

Self-insertation: Author has written her/himself in the story. Not always Mary Sue, but close.

Shounen ai: warning: "boy love" or a focus on relationships between young boys. Sex hinted at, but not as explicitly as in "yaoi".

Slash/Slashy/Slashyness: Homosexual relationships/sex, can be m/m or f/f

Yaoi: Often used as a term for slash, there are a few differences though.
